From 4 to 7 November 2013, the Sri -Lanka Association of Urological Surgeons (SLAUS) held their 8th Annual Scientific Conference. The conference was a historic one as it is the first joint conference with the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS).

The conference was attended by over 100 delegates from across Sri Lanka, making it the most successful conference of SLAUS to date. The comprehensive program involved over 20 esteemed experts in the field from the British Association together with highly respected leaders in the sector from the Sri Lankan Association.
THE CONFERENCE

The pre-congress workshops and instructional courses took place from 4th to 6th November at the Asiri Surgical Hospital and Hotel Taj Samudra. The workshops and courses covered a range of topics including BPH, urodynamics and urological malignancy, in addition to a live surgical session on male slings and a session specifically focusing on research and publication in urology. The workshops also featured a ground breaking session of a robotic renal surgery transmitted live from London via web telecast on 4th November, the first of this type of session in Sri Lanka.

The Annual Scientific Meeting took place on the 7th November 2013 at Hotel Taj Samudra, and covered a series of topics including BPH, Prostate & Bladder malignancy, Female urology, Urosepsis, Urolithiasis, Neuro-urology and fistulae as well as a session focusing on UK fellowships for Sri Lankan trainees.
THE INAUGURATION  

On November 6 2013, the Sri Lanka Association also held the Inauguration of their 8th Annual Sessions. The Chief Guest at the Inauguration was BAUS President-Elect Mark J Speakman and the Guest of Honour was Dr Athula Kahandaliyanage, the World Health Organization’s Sustainable Development and Healthy Environment Director – Southeast Asia Region.

The program included speeches by Mr Speakman and Dr Kahandaliyanage, as well as the Presidential Address by Dr Anura Wijewardane, President – SLAUS, who highlighted that the joint sessions were a ‘landmark’ occasion in reviving the closeness between the UK and Sri Lanka fields of Urology.

The formal program was followed by a fellowship and cocktail reception and cultural show. The Inauguration was attended by over 275 from across the Sri Lankan healthcare sector, who greatly enjoyed the formal and cultural program, which included entertainment by the dance troupe of the Sri Lanka Army and a musical performance by Dr Suran and his band.
THE SOCIAL EVENTS  
4 The Sri Lanka Association also hosted the British Faculty and their family members with true Sri Lankan hospitality with a range of social events including a Welcome Dinner at Hotel Taj Samudra and a Faculty Dinner at Hotel Peagus Reef. The social events were enjoyed by all and often concluded with singing and dancing of the Sri Lankan and British faculty! 5
An extensive program for accompanying persons of the British faculty was also organized by the Sri Lankan Association, which were greatly appreciated and enjoyed. The program included a tour of the attractions of Colombo and a visit to the renown Dilmah tea factory as well as a range of shopping excursions.
